Understanding Body Mass Index (BMI)

- Below 18.5 – Underweight

- 25 to 29.9 – Overweight
- 30 and Above – Obesity
Frequently Asked Questions
How is BMI calculated?
The formula for BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. If you use imperial units, the formula is weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared, multiplied by 703.
Is BMI an accurate indicator of health?
BMI is a useful screening tool, but it does not diagnose the body fatness or health of an individual. For example, it does not distinguish between excess fat, muscle, or bone mass. A trained healthcare provider should perform an appropriate health assessment to evaluate an individual's health status and risks.
